Deputy Manager - Urea

Yara Fertilizers India Pvt Ltd is a 100% subsidiary of Yara International ASA. Yara has supplied fertilizers as well as fertilizer raw materials to the Indian market for over two decades. Yara India has continuously strengthened its footprint in Western and Southern India by providing Crop nutrition solutions with combination of Premium products and Knowledge through unique Farmer centric approach.

Yara’s philosophy is to connect with thousands of farmers at the grass root level and has a strong commitment to serving the agriculture sector in India, thereby improving the livelihood of Indian farmer.To leverage on this and to expand into the northern & eastern geographies of India, Yara acquired Tata Chemicals’ 1.2 MN MT Urea plant in UP, Northern India. With this acquisition Yara India’s scale of operation has grown significantly. 

Role and Responsibilities

Technical/ Functional Responsibilities

  • Monitor urea plant operations to ensure adherence to design limits, Integrity Operating Windows (IOWs), and process parameters; initiate corrective or preventive actions as required.
  • Review laboratory results, identify deviations, and implement timely corrective measures.
  • Conduct technical studies, performance analyses, and process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and reliability.
  • Ensure full compliance with SOPs, IMS/YMS/PSM guidelines, monitoring schedules, and approved work instructions.
  • Lead and support the shift team during critical operations, start-ups, shutdowns, emergencies, and turnaround activities.
  • Conduct routine plant inspections to identify abnormalities, hazards, leakages, and housekeeping gaps, ensuring timely resolution through corrective actions.
  • Coordinate with the Maintenance team for safe handover, execution, and completion of maintenance activities in line with SWP and safety protocols.
  • Perform troubleshooting of operational issues and manage process upsets to minimize downtime.
  • Maintain comprehensive operational documentation, including logbooks, daily production reports, and shift handover notes.
  • Exercise authority to initiate partial or complete shutdowns when safety, environmental, or operational risks arise.
  • Provide structured on-the-job training to team members and new joiners, aligned with departmental KPIs and Yara values.
  • Raise maintenance job notifications, review daily plans, and manage process orders through SAP.
  • Oversee shift rosters, attendance, and leave management, ensuring adequate manpower allocation.
  • Support overall employee capability building and developmental initiatives in coordination with the Manager.

HESQ Responsibilities

  • Ensure strict compliance with SWPs, SOPs, checklists, safety talks, and Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO) requirements.
  • Conduct and document structured risk assessments (LMRA, SJA, RA-1, RA-2, What-if) and lead toolbox/safety talks.
  • Identify and report HESQ deviations, safety hazards, near misses, and Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) observations in the “Synergi” portal, and participate in incident investigations as assigned.
  • Ensure availability, readiness, and correct usage of safety equipment and PPE, including online air masks, breathing apparatus (BA) sets, and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs).
  • Maintain and update IMS procedures, work instructions, and safety documentation.
  • Drive high housekeeping standards through regular inspections and follow-up actions.

Process Safety Management (PSM) Compliance

Ensure full adherence to PSM elements by:

  • Committing to HESQ excellence
  • Understanding hazards and associated risks
  • Effectively managing risks
  • Learning continuously from experience

Preferred Skills

  • Sound process knowledge and operational expertise of process plant
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills
  • Familiarity with SAP and computer-based plant systems
  • Knowledge of IMS and hazardous waste regulations
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and safety compliance
  • ERP Systems (SAP), online Portals (i.e. HESQ), Advance knowledge of MS Office and AI tools

Education & Experience

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree (B.Tech/B.E.) in Chemical Engineering from a recognized and reputable college/university. Consistent academic performance with a minimum of 60% marks in 10th, 12th, and B.Tech.
  • Experience: Minimum 6 years of relevant experience in process industries. Experience in a urea manufacturing plant or similar continuous process industry preferred. Hands-on exposure to DCS operations, process monitoring, and control systems in fertilizer or related industrial environments will be an added advantage.
