Yara Fertilizers India Pvt Ltd is a 100% subsidiary of Yara International ASA. Yara has supplied fertilizers as well as fertilizer raw materials to the Indian market for over two decades. Yara India has continuously strengthened its footprint in Western and Southern India by providing Crop nutrition solutions with combination of Premium products and Knowledge through unique Farmer centric approach.

To leverage on this and to expand into the northern & eastern geographies of India, Yara acquired Tata Chemicals’ 1.2 MN MT Urea plant in UP, Northern India. With this acquisition Yara India’s scale of operation has grown significantly 

Responsibilities

To lead the Fire & Safety function of Yara Fertilisers India by ensuring statutory compliance, implementing world-class Fire, Safety, Health & Environment (FSHE) systems, and safeguarding people, assets, and the environment. The role drives proactive fire prevention, emergency preparedness, and a strong safety culture across plant operations and township, while liaising with statutory and external authorities.

 

Fire Prevention, Emergency Preparedness & Response

  • Establish and maintain robust fire protection and fire prevention systems across the complex.
  • Ensure availability, adequacy, and reliability of fire water systems, hydrants, fire alarms, gas detectors, and emergency equipment.
  • Ensure timely maintenance, testing, and readiness of firefighting appliances, fire water pumps, and fire station systems.
  • Lead emergency response during fire/incidents, ensuring rescue of personnel and asset protection.
  • Plan, coordinate, and conduct periodic mock drills at L1, L2, and L3 levels as per On-Site Emergency Plan.
  • Create fire awareness and ensure regular training for plant personnel and fire staff, including selection and capability building of fire crew.

Safety Management & Statutory Compliance

  • Act as Head of Department for Fire & Safety as per UPFR (Safety Officers) Rules, 1984 and other applicable legislation.
  • Advise and assist factory management in fulfilling statutory and non-statutory obligations related to occupational health, safety, and environment.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable OH&S, Fire, and Environmental laws and maintain the Departmental Legal Compliance Matrix.
  • Conduct daily plant inspections, identify fire and safety hazards, and ensure timely corrective and preventive actions.
  • Investigate all injuries, near-misses, fire incidents, and emergencies; submit reports with actionable recommendations to management.

EHSMS, Environmental Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Promote adoption and effective implementation of HESQ Policy and Safety Management System (SMS).
  • Lead implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of EHSMS in line with ISO 14001 and relevant standards.
  • Coordinate COSHH assessments for all chemicals (process and non-process) and ensure risk assessment before introduction of new chemicals/equipment.
  • Ensure timely response to environmental incidents/deviations and implementation of corrective and preventive actions.
  • Conduct environmental aspect–impact assessments (including Management of Change) and ensure compliance with audit recommendations.
  • Drive initiatives for natural resource conservation, waste minimization, and environmental awareness across employees and contractors.

Stakeholder Coordination & Capability Building

  • Liaise with statutory and external bodies including Director of Factories, Chief Fire Officer, Civil Defence, Mutual Aid Partners, and District Disaster Management Authorities.
  • Ensure safety, health, and environmental compliance in township areas.
  • Ensure contractors and contract employees receive adequate safety and environmental training before deployment.
  • Periodically review and update Site Safety Policy and Safety, Health & Environment policies.

Preferred Skills

  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills in emergency and high-risk environments
  • In-depth knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety, Fire Prevention, and Emergency Management
  • Strong understanding of statutory requirements, audits, and compliance management
  • Incident investigation, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Ability to build safety culture and drive behavioral change
  • Proficient in English and Hindi language

Education and Experience

  • Education:
    • The incumbent should possess a strong technical or science-based educational background, with any one of the following qualifications: B.Tech. (Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical, Fire & safety, Industrial, Production, or related disciplines), or a B.Sc. (Physics, Chemistry).
    • In addition to the above, a mandatory safety qualification is required, such as a Diploma in Industrial Safety (DIS) or a Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Safety / Safety Management.
    • The safety qualification must be recognized by the Directorate of Factories, Central Labour Institute (CLI), Mumbai, or the respective State Labour Department. 
  • Experience: 
    • Mandatory: Minimum 15+ years of overall experience in Fire & Safety / EHS functions within large manufacturing, process, or high-hazard industries.
    • Preferred: 3–4 years of experience independently heading the Fire & Safety department, with end-to-end responsibility for statutory compliance, emergency preparedness, safety management systems, and coordination with statutory authorities.
