Full Stack Developer

We at Yara are part of a global network, collaborating to profitably and responsibly solve some of the world's key challenges - resource scarcity, food insecurity and environmental change.

About Varda (formerly ODX - Open Farm and Field Data Exchange)

Over the past decade, the agriculture industry has witnessed a dramatic surge in investment towards the digitization of farming by large incumbents, tech multinationals and innovative start-ups across the world. This development has caused the proliferation of data-based services aimed at improving farmers productivity and agricultural efficiency at large. However, to this date no company has achieved the sufficient depth and breadth of information required to offer transformative, field-specific services, and many challenges prohibit farm and field data sharing at scale.

Overcoming these challenges requires a truly collaborative, industry-wide approach for data management. In this context, Yara have issued a “call for action” to bring together institutions from across the world and jointly build an ‘Open Farm and Field Data Exchange’ modelled along the lines of similar data sharing schemes that have emerged in other industries recently.

At Varda, our goal is to accelerate food systems transformation through field connectivity and data collaboration, to digitally connect farms and fields to enable end-to-end transparency and reward positive farming practices. Varda’s primary purpose is to act as a “clearing house” and neutral broker between data providers (including farmers) and data users.

About the role

We are currently seeking a Full Stack Developer to join our brand-new growing technology team to be the core of our data competency. This includes:

  1. To build modern data platform able to ingest efficiently and rapidly, model, transform and manage a wide variety of data sources. Data are exposed through multiple mechanisms including APIs, web applications, analytics, and reporting.
  2. To develop experiments, proof-of-concepts and new data services leveraging our platform and data science expertise.

The Agri sector has a uniquely diverse range of data across climate science, biology & agronomy, soil chemistry, earth observation, IoT, blockchain and more. This presents a stimulating technical environment working on problems with societal benefit.

This role is open in the following location: UK, Italy, Finland, Norway, France, Switzerland and Spain.

Our Tech Stack

Our tech stack is currently principally AWS-based though we may also use some Azure and GCP services. We employ a mix of modern data engineering, data science and knowledge engineering practices and cloud-based technologies, which you will have the opportunity to influence.

This covers the gamut of event-driven architecture (e.g. Kafka), ELT (e.g. S3, Redshift, DBT), ETL (e.g. AWS Glue), APIs (e.g. Cassandra, GraphQL, REST, AsyncAPI, Tyk), knowledge graph (e.g. OWL, Dgraph) data science (e.g. Kubeflow, Jupyter), BI/Analytics (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI), UI (e.g. React, Mapbox), and the DevOps infrastructure required to operate a robust and secure platform (Kubernetes, CI/CD, secret management, logging/monitoring/alerting). We adopt Agile development practices.

What you will be doing

  • Ensure stability and high standards of the engineering team
  • You write clean, testable, scalable, and maintainable code that complies with web standards and best practices
  • You improve development knowledge/skills of the team by pair programming, teaching best practices and by doing code reviews
  • Work together with engineers, UX professionals, and Subject Matter Experts in rapidly creating solutions for data dashboards, APIs, and data visualisation tools for the agriculture ecosystem
  • Contribute to MVPs, products release and various stages of development and release on different release trains

What you will bring

  • Experience of at least two full projects with web & mobile solutions using a Javascript technology stack
  • Experience coding with Javascript - from VanillaJS to libraries and frameworks (Nodejs/ReactJs/Express).
  • Experience with Java development.
  • Familiarity with API-first development practices
  • Knowledge on design and development of performant non-relational & relational databases (e.g. SQL, NoSQL, MongoDB, Cassandra, graph databases)
  • Deployment experience in working with container tech (Docker/Kubernetes/AWS EKS) and CI/CD (e,g, CircleCi, Jenkins).
  • Ability to test your code with unit, integration and E2E tests
  • Prior experience working in an agile environment following scrum methodology
  • Experience with other backend programming languages (e.g. Python) is desirable
  • Experience building data-focused tools (e.g. time series, geospatial data) is desirable

Why Us?

  • You and your team define your own objectives, which align with your mission and the business strategy, shape your own roadmap and work to deliver value each step along the way
  • Be a key contributor in sustainable global change, reducing carbon emissions while financially supporting growers and enabling the global transformation of farming and its impact on the environment.
  • You would be working with a globally dispersed and diverse team.  We adopt a virtual-first approach, where we encourage face-to-face collaboration, but are focused on recruiting the best talent.

Support for personal development with internal knowledge sharing, Data Science/engineering, Agronomy, Software engineering practices and external courses via a Udemy subscription to support learning and continuous improvement.
