Senior Analytical Chemist

Responsibilities

Senior Analytical Chemist:

An opportunity exists for an experienced Senior Analytical Chemist for a residential position based in Karratha, Western Australia. Reporting to the Laboratory Superintendent, the Senior Analytical Chemist is responsible for controlling the laboratory quality systems, and to enable Yara’s YPF laboratory assets to operate efficiently and effectively.

The Senior Analytical Chemist will report to the Quality & Laboratory Superintendent. The primary responsibilities will include:

  • Implement laboratory Quality Assurance (QA) / Quality Control (QC)  Program to applicable standards and regulatory requirements including preparation of the laboratory towards possible  ISO 17025 certification.
  • Undertake and participate in internal audits, meetings, forums and training. 
  • Oversee all aspects of current laboratory methodologies and environmental instrumentation.
  • Develop and implement any future analytical requirements, including equipment procurement, method development, and analysis and QA / QC to NATA accredited standards.
  • Develop and implement a Quality Management System (QMS) system that operates in accordance with NATA requirements to ISO 17025.
  • Assist in the administration and development of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Maintain all environmental equipment both onsite and off-site. 
  • Support Yara’s initiative of “Safe by Choice” plans and actions in all activities to drive ZERO Total Recordable Injuries within laboratory function and site’s goals.
  • 100% compliance with site’s Drug & Alcohol Policy (zero +ve results).
  • Undertake Yara’s Walk-Observe-Communicate (WOC) inspections as per site’s goals.

Profile

Essential requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (minimum) or equivalent.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in a senior position in analytical laboratories.
  • Demonstrated experience operating in accordance with NATA Certification (ISO 17025)
  • Demonstrated laboratory management experience including mentoring and training of laboratory staff in methodologies, data interpretation and laboratory operations in line with NATA accredited standards.
  • Advanced computer literacy and familiarity with multiple Microsoft Software packages.

Desirable experience:

  • Experience in acquiring and implementing laboratory NATA Certification (ISO 17025), including QMS development.
  • Demonstrated laboratory experience in chemical, petrochemical, gas or refinery operating plants.
  • Experience in water, soil, sediment and/or air quality environmental monitoring, including methodology development, sampling, analysis and data interpretation.
  • Knowledge of ammonia/fertiliser production and associated laboratory requirements.
  • Familiarity with LIMS administration including SQL
  • Familiarity with Dangerous Goods Legislation, including storage and handling of hazadous materials
  • Experience in Project Management
  • Sound understanding of Occupational Health and Safety Requirements within a Major Health Facility.
