Head of Technology Digital Production

About the Unit

Yara was founded in 1905 to solve an emerging famine crisis in Europe.. Today Yara is a global company operating in more than 160 countries and employing more than 17,000 individuals – all working hard to fulfill our mission of responsibly feeding the world and protecting the plant.

Being the world’s leading crop nutrition company, Yara is also the world's largest producer of ammonia, nitrates and NPKs. Our Production segment is thus an integral building block for delivering on our mission – with a clearly stated ambition to become world-leading on metrics such as safety, environmental footprint, quality and production costs. Long term, the target is the “Plant of the Future” with zero emissions, and low capex/opex. Building on a lean transformation, we are now elevating our focus on digital solutions to help us achieve this ambition.

To lead this effort, we have established a global unit called Digital Production and we plan to significantly grow our efforts within this field.

About the role

“Value first” is a core principle for how we work. Starting with the specific problem to be solved, we will define, build, and implement targeted use cases in an agile way. Development and deployment of a wide range of technologies will therefore be part of daily operations for our team. In particular, enabling technologies for capturing the value inherent in our vast repository of operational data will be critical.

To succeed, we require a technical direction and strategy, and a digital platform that allows rapid iteration and deployment of (data-driven) use cases, as well as integration of existing off-the shelf solutions and services. As of today, very few elements of this are in place. As our Head of Technology, you will be responsible for defining and building it.

We will rely on you for technical architecture, design, test and deployment/integration of the full tech stack for Digital Production. You’ll also be able to select and build the team that together will form a world class technology function.

You will have the chance to shape our philosophy for the full industry 4.0 technology stack. We intend to build thought leadership on the topic - in our own industry, and beyond - and you will be driving this effort. At the same time you get to work with some of the most exceptional people in the industry on our journey to feed the world and protect the planet. How many other places can you do that?

Responsibilities

  • Lead and set the technical direction and strategy for the digital technology platform in Yara Production, including driving to optimal balance on build vs. buy across the stack
  • Own the design, build, test and delivery of required tech stack and data infrastructure
  • Build, document, manage, measure and validate the tech roadmap; work closely with the solution teams to ensure tech roadmap is driven by concrete use cases and business value
  • Evaluate and establish strategic partnerships with tech vendors / suppliers
  • Build and develop a world class tech team; coach, mentor and inspire tech leads and developers
  • Guide and coach on agile techniques and ways of working to help continuously improve teams and software development process
  • Identify new or white space technologies, including assessment of applicability for Yara
  • Collaborate closely with IT and other internal / external stakeholders to ensure Yara-wide optimization and a strong grip on security, reliability and automation
  • Follow external developments and drive Yara contribution by e.g., presenting at conferences, and writing for publication

Profile

  • MS/PhD in relevant field (e.g., Computer Science, Engineering)
  • 10+ years of experience from technology roles such as Head of Technology, Head of Data Platform, CTO, etc. at a start-up and major industrial
  • You have built and managed industrial-digital tech stacks / IIoT platforms from scratch before;  working with product, UX/UI and data science teams to enable digital products is what you do
  • Technical background; while you may not be a coder by profession anymore, you take pride in the pieces of software you have written and code is still you second language
  • Deep understanding and experience of key elements of digital key components including machine learning deployment and management frameworks, data infrastructure, ETL, API, from the edge to the cloud
  • Expertise in agile software development methodologies and processes
  • Experience leading DevOps / continuous delivery teams
  • Deep understanding of cyber security vulnerabilities and risk management
  • More than 5 years of experience in leading teams, keen on attracting, developing and retaining the top talents
  • Effective communicator of technical concepts to both technical and non-technical resources
  • Pragmatic
