Process Control Engineer

We at Yara are part of a global network, collaborating to profitably and responsibly solve some of the world's key challenges - resource scarcity, food insecurity and environmental change.

About the Unit

Yara’s mission is to responsibly feed the world and protect the planet. To convert this into action, Yara Technology and Projects drives innovation across our global operations, developing technologies that enable emission-free fertilizer production based on renewable energy. One of Yara’s strategic goals is to develop tomorrow’s practical and economic production technology for green fertilizer.

The Process Modelling and Control department (PMC) located in Porsgrunn consists of 14 highly skilled, multinational specialists in process modeling, simulation, process technology, and advanced process control. To strengthen our capabilities in Model Predictive Control (MPC), we are looking for a Process Control Engineer who will support, improve, and scale optimization solutions across Yara’s production network.

In this position, the new hire will strengthen Yara’s MPC (referred to internally as Advanced Process Control - APC) portfolio—enhancing existing plant applications and driving strategic projects that shape the future of plant-wide optimization.

This role preferred location is in Porsgrunn (Norway), but open to other European Yara's locations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and optimize existing APC/MPC applications in Yara’s global production plants.
  • Lead or participate in the deployment of new APC/MPC solutions across multiple sites.
  • Collaborate closely with external technology partners, solution vendors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Develop innovative approaches and digital tools for plant optimization and advanced control strategies.
  • Contribute to building a strong internal competence environment within APC/MPC.

Profile

  • MSc in Chemical Engineering, Process Systems Engineering, Control Engineering, Cybernetics, or a related field.
  • Ideally 5+ years of relevant industrial experience in process industries.
  • Strong process domain understanding (chemicals, energy, fertilizer, oil & gas, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience in process control and optimization
  • Proficiency with Model Predictive Control implementation, tuning, and troubleshooting
  • Experience with plant-wide optimization methodologies
  • Project management and stakeholder coordination skills
  • Knowledge of fertilizer process technologies is an advantage
  • Experience in process modeling/simulation (steady-state or dynamic) is an advantage
  • Proactive, self-driven, and solution-oriented
  • Strong organizational and planning skills
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Ability and willingness to travel globally (approx. 4–6 trips per year, 1–2 weeks duration)
  • Experience working in multicultural environments
  • Additional languages are an advantage
