We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Laboratory Analyst to join our Health, Environment, Safety, and Quality (HESQ) team.

About the role

Reporting to the Laboratory Supervisor, the Laboratory Analyst serves as a key technical resource responsible for performing and coordinating routine and specialized analytical testing, providing technical guidance to laboratory personnel, and ensuring the delivery of accurate, timely, and reliable analytical data that supports safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible plant operations.

The role supports laboratory quality systems, equipment reliability, environmental monitoring, and continuous improvement initiatives, while assisting with the prioritization of daily testing activities and the review and interpretation of analytical results.

Working closely with Operations, Maintenance, HESQ, Procurement, and other stakeholders, the Laboratory Analyst ensures laboratory activities are conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with Company standards, established procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.

In the absence of the Laboratory Supervisor, the incumbent may provide technical and operational support to maintain continuity of laboratory operations. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake other duties, projects, and assignments reasonably associated with the role and the operational requirements of the department.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Perform routine and specialised laboratory testing in accordance with established analytical methods, schedules, and procedures
• Coordinate daily laboratory testing activities and assist with prioritising work based on plant and operational requirements
• Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and support to Laboratory Technicians to ensure testing is performed accurately and in accordance with established procedures.
• Collect, receive, sort, and prepare plant, product, and environmental samples for laboratory analysis.
• Utilize laboratory data and trend analysis to support process optimization, operational decision-making, and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Review laboratory results for accuracy, completeness, and consistency, and escalate abnormal or significant results to the Laboratory Analyst/Supervisor.
• Interpret analytical results and provide technical insights to support plant performance, product quality, and operational decision-making.
• Investigate routine technical issues and assist with troubleshooting laboratory testing equipment, and analytical procedures.
• Maintain accurate laboratory records, test results, reports, log sheets, and computerized data.
• Prepare and safely handle laboratory reagents, chemicals and solutions required for analytical testing.
• Perform and/or support influent and effluent testing in accordance with Environmental Management Authority (EMA) requirements and applicable standards.
• Perform and/or support gas testing activities for confined space entry, Product Ammonia Certification, and emergency ambient monitoring.
• Operate laboratory equipment safely and effectively, and coordinate or assist with inspection, calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
• Monitor laboratory equipment performance and report defects, calibration requirements, and other issues to the Laboratory Analyst/Supervisor.
• Monitor laboratory supplies, chemicals, and gases, and communicate replenishment requirements to the Laboratory Analyst/Supervisor.
• Support laboratory quality control systems, procedures, integrity audits, and other quality initiatives.
• Identify and recommend opportunities to improve laboratory methods, processes, efficiency, and reliability.
• Support environmental monitoring, method development, research activities, and special laboratory projects.
• Work closely with Operations to understand sample requirements and priorities and provide timely analytical results.
• Liaise with Operations, Maintenance, HESQ, Logistics, contractors, vendors, and other stakeholders as required to support laboratory activities.
• Participate in HESQ activities, safety meetings, inspections, emergency drills, incident investigations, and other safety initiatives.
• Support emergency response activities, including laboratory-related testing and monitoring.
• Promote and actively demonstrate the Company's Health, Environment, Safety, and Quality (HESQ) standards.
• Provide input into the Company’s IMS and participate in internal and external ISO audits.
• Perform other duties, projects, and assignments reasonably associated with the role and as directed by the Laboratory Analyst/Supervisor.

What You Will Bring

We are looking for someone with:

• An Associate Degree or Diploma in Chemistry, Chemical Laboratory Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, or another relevant scientific discipline from a recognised institution.
• A minimum of eight (8) years' relevant laboratory experience, preferably within the petrochemical, manufacturing, energy, or process industries.
• Experience working within ISO-certified management systems or accredited laboratory environments would be an asset.
• Demonstrated experience coordinating laboratory activities and providing technical guidance and support to laboratory personnel.
• Strong knowledge of laboratory analytical techniques, instrumentation, quality control practices, and safe chemical handling.
• Experience supporting the development and technical competency of laboratory personnel would be an asset.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications and computerized laboratory information systems.
• Strong attention to detail and a high level of accuracy in laboratory testing, data recording, and reporting.
• Good analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to investigate technical issues, interpret analytical data, and recommend appropriate actions.
• Good planning and organisational skills, with the ability to coordinate multiple testing requirements and priorities.
• A demonstrated commitment to HESQ standards, laboratory quality and continuous improvement.
• Knowledge of laboratory quality systems, equipment calibration practices, and regulatory compliance requirements would be an asset.

You will be comfortable interpreting data, identifying trends, troubleshooting technical issues, and contributing to initiatives that enhance laboratory performance, quality, efficiency, and reliability.

Flexibility to work shifts during the weekdays, weekends, and public holidays, as well as extended hours when required to meet business needs, and must be comfortable working safely in an industrial petrochemical environment, including in confined spaces and at heights.
