Operations Manager

About the Unit

Yara Trinidad Ltd. is a subsidiary of Yara International, a Norwegian Crop Nutrition Company, and is part of a global network, collaborating to profitably and responsibly solve some of the world's key challenges - resource scarcity, food insecurity, and environmental change.  Yara Trinidad Ltd. manages and operates two (2) ammonia plants and a seaport in Point Lisas on behalf of Trinidad Nitrogen Co Ltd., a joint venture between National Enterprises Ltd (NEL) and Yara, with approximately 180 employees.

Profile

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Production, the successful candidate will be responsible for managing the daily activities associated with the safe and optimized operation of the plant and its associated supporting assets.

The ability to develop strong collaborative links within all company functional areas is a key competency for the incumbent.  This position is expected to manage the operation of either the Tringen 1 or Tringen 2 ammonia plant and their associated operating areas.  Responsibilities will include but are not limited to technical, managerial, administrative as well as project management.

They will be functionally competent with an Enterprise Resource Planning System (SAP preferred), as well as Microsoft Excel, Word, Sharepoint, PowerPoint, and MS Project.

 

This position will be expected to develop productive collaborative interfaces with all departments to ensure work processes and continuous improvement of special projects comply with all corporate/company standards and Local regulations. The selected candidate will be an organized individual who can manage time and resources effectively and work extended hours when needed to meet business commitments. He/she must also possess the flexibility to work within an industrial petrochemical complex, including confined spaces and at heights.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor and develop all line reports in accordance with Yara values
  • Maintain compliance with all required local and Yara environmental regulatory and governance standards
  • Manage and direct plant operations department resources toward the achievement of energy-efficient, optimized, and reliable plant operations
  • Develop continuous improvement strategies for the enhancement of plant safety, reliability, energy efficiency and productivity
  • Maintain Plant Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through systematic operations and maintenance, which includes troubleshooting problems, ensuring that plant routines are established and executed, analyzing production and energy accounting variances, and taking corrective actions to reduce/eliminate future variances
  • Develop and manage the budget allocation for the respective plant cost center(s)
  • Develops departmental annual budgets with inputs into the Site’s Capital investment budgets. This includes monitoring and reporting on costs, budgets, and key performance indicators
  • Central role in the planning and achievement of the Company’s Operational Excellence, Continuous Improvement, Lean, Agile, and Digital Strategies
  • Contribute to the site’s business plan and setting the Company’s Strategy, Direction, and Policy
  • Assess and secure resource needs for plant activities, including outages and/or turnarounds
  • Ensure the development of department personnel for individual and team growth and ensure adequate Plant manning, which will include participating in recruitment and selection activities
  • Spearhead continual assessment of new and existing technologies for opportunities to reduce costs and improve productivity
  • Preparation of routine and special plant reports, including delivering presentations

What you need for this position:

Education: Preferably a Bachelor of Science in Chemical or Process Engineering from an accredited Institution OR an equivalent relevant combination of skills and experience.

 

Experience:

  • At least 10 years of supervisory and execution experience, preferably in an Ammonia Plant environment.
  • Coordination of major projects such as outages or turnarounds, at a process plant facility.
  • Any comparable combination of educational qualifications and related work experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Operational aptitude and technical capability to be able to work with all levels of employees in a process plant production environment
  • Highly proficient written and oral communication skills
  • Must be goal-oriented and focused on achieving results
  • Must be committed to recognizing and developing staff potential within the business unit to ensure high performance and growth
  • Highly skilled in operational/process risk judgment and decision-making
  • Strong ability to mentor and develop with demonstrated experience in Continuous Improvement
  • Competence in Hazard Analysis and Project Management
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, best practices, and procedures
  • Working knowledge of a Computerized Maintenance Management System (SAP preferred) and production computer software packages
  • Mandatory troubleshooting, incident investigation skills, and competence in root cause analysis of process operations
  • Good procedural skills and formalities of procedural skills, and endurance capabilities to work long hours as needed
  • Strong evidence skills to operate in a data-driven environment
  • Excellent teambuilding skills
