Facilities Maintenance Technician

About the Unit

The Yara Port Sutton ammonia terminal is a bulk anhydrous ammonia storage and transfer facility that operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This ammonia terminal sits on approximately 3.5 acres of waterfront property in Port Sutton, Tampa.  Imported ammonia arrives at the facility via Ship (refrigerated gas tankers), and is off-loaded into storage tanks on-site via marine loading arm and pipeline.  The product is stored as a liquid at minus -33 degrees centigrade.  From there, the ammonia is reheated and distributed via commercial pipeline or tank trucks to agricultural fertilizer manufacturers and other industrial consumers.          


Monitor and maintain Terminal equipment in accordance with the preventive maintenance program to ensure proper and safe operation. Monitor and coordinate ship unloading operations to ensure safe and efficient transfers. Identify and trouble shoot potential equipment failures in a timely manner as to not disrupt Terminal operations. Must qualify as operator/PIC and maintain a TWIC card.


  • Perform a variety of tasks pertaining to the installation, calibration, maintenance, repair and service of the electrical and mechanical equipment, instruments, sensors and structures
  • Diagnose and perform repairs to ammonia compressors, air compressors, pumps and motors, involving inspection and replacement of broken or worn parts used within the ammonia system
  • Write maintenance procedures including hazard assessments and safe job analysis for the variety of maintenance and repair projects completed
  • Monitor and maintain critical spare supply to ensure maximum equipment up time.
  • Read and interpret drawings and schematics. Provide input and recommend changes on design drawings as requested.  Red line all changes to facility P&ID’s on a master set in the maintenance office
  • Act as PIC and Vessel permit officer to ensure safe and efficient cargo transfer.
  • Adhere to YNA policies and comply with federal and OSHA regulations in all aspects of work
  • Act as Plant operator first/substitute as needed, as well as perform any other duties or trainings assigned by the Management Team, including general terminal maintenance, housekeeping, safety training etc.
  • Perform routine security duties as described in the Facility Security Plan.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of 5 years of terminal maintenance experience - 3 years ammonia
  • DOT, PSM, First Aid, CPR, Blood borne Pathogen, AED certified and Hazmat Technician Level
  • Eligible and maintain a TWIC

Additional Information
  • Must be an American citizen or lawful permanent resident
  • The position holder must to be able to:
  • Pick-up heavy material (25-50 lbs.)
  • Work at heights (up to 125-150 feet) and in confined spaces
  • Work on feet for several hours, including bending and kneeling
  • Wear respiratory protection, in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR Parts 1910 & 1926
  • Work in all types of PPE, including fall protection and level A fully encapsulated chemical suit
  • Work outdoors/indoors under extreme temperatures
  • Work overtime as needed to deliver on terminal operational obligations
